Using Aromatherapy for Indigestion and Morning Sickness During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, more than half of all women experience morning sickness as a result of hormonal changes that occur.  While most women get relief after the first trimester there are some who experience it throughout the entire pregnancy.

Indigestion is also a common problem as hormones can cause digestive slowdowns and the growing baby puts pressure on your stomach.  And while it’s not always possible to prevent these issues, essential oils can help you to get relief.

Indigestion

Indigestion is the condition in which your food doesn’t agree with you.  During pregnancy, indigestion can become a problem while your hormones change and the growing baby begins to take up more and more space inside your body and presses on your digestive tract.

Indigestion can cause you to feel stomach pain and lead to heartburn.  There are many things you can do to prevent this such as eating small meals, avoiding overly spicy foods, and avoiding any food that doesn’t agree with you.

But if you do eat a meal that bothers your stomach, essential oils can help to bring relief.  The three that seem to help the most are peppermint, ginger, and fennel essential oils.

You can rub a few drops of these oils on your belly or on the bottoms of your feet to get some relief.  You can also use them in a diffuser or rub a drop under your nose to give more lasting effects wherever you go.

If you’re struggling with heartburn, you can use peppermint oil for relief.  Adding two drops of peppermint to an ounce of almond milk can give quick relief. You can also add three drops of peppermint oil to an eight-ounce glass of water and sip it all day long.

Morning Sickness

Morning sickness can strike at any time of the day.  For some women, this is a mild issue while for others it can be debilitating.  If you’re struggling with morning sickness, there are several essential oils that can help.

Most women find that ginger and peppermint essential oils are reliable helpers.  By diffusing one or both of these oils you can breathe in aromatic relief.  If you don’t have a diffuser, you can also add a few drops to a warm bath or even to a cotton ball that you keep nearby.

You can also add lavender, sandalwood, and ginger essential oils to some fractionated coconut oil to create massage oil.  Rub this onto your belly to get relief from morning sickness.

If you’re particularly suffering in the morning you may want to try diffusing grapefruit or peppermint essential oil in your bedroom through the night.  This may help you to have fewer problems when you wake up the next morning.

Additionally, chamomile, frankincense, and lemon oils can provide relief.  You may find that it helps to try a few different ones until you decide what works best for you.  These oils also help to improve your appetite which can be a big help during the first trimester.
